The True Story of Snoop Dogg, His Real Name, and His Family
Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr. is the true name of Snoop Dogg. On October 20, 1971, he was born. He was born in Long Beach, California, to Vernell Varnado and Beverly Tate. When Calvin Cordozar Broadus Sr. (1948–1985), Vernell’s Vietnam War veteran and singer father, died three months after his birth, his son was given the middle name “Vernell” in honor of his stepfather.
His father was absent from most of his experiences. Because of his love of the Peanuts cartoon character, his parents gave him the moniker “Snoopy” as a youngster, and it stuck. His mother had three boys, and he was the second. His mother and stepfather split in 1975. The Golgotha Trinity Baptist Church was where Broadus first learned to sing and play the piano at the tender age of three.
As early as sixth grade, he began to rap. In his youth, Broadus sold sweets, delivered newspapers, and bagged groceries to help support his family and make ends meet, as well as completing community service hours. According to many who knew him, he was an enthusiastic churchgoer and committed student who also played football and sang in several choirs.
Even though his mother tried hard to keep him out of trouble, Broadus revealed in 1993 that he began involved in criminal activities and joining gangs throughout his teenage years.
Broadus liked to rap in class. He recalled: “My rapping in the school halls gathered so many people that the principal mistook it for a fight. It helped me understand that I had a natural gift for writing. People were interested in my raps, which made me want to learn more about me.”
For most of his adolescence, Broadus found himself in trouble with the law. Though he denied it in 1993, he was an associate of the Rollin’ 20s Crips gang in Long Beach’s Eastside area, which he claimed he had never joined. He was arrested for cocaine possession shortly after graduating from Long Beach Polytechnic High School in 1989 and spent the following three years in prison, including time at Wayside Jail. Snoop Dogg, his cousins Nate Dogg and Lil’ 1/2 Dead, and a buddy, Warren G, formed a band called 213 in Long Beach, California, where they grew up.

Snoop Dogg’s Music Career Path
Snoop Doggy Dogg was Broadus’ stage moniker when he started recording. Deep Cover’s theme song and Dr. Dre’s debut solo album The Chronic were the first two projects in which he worked with Dr. Dre and other members of his old band, Tha Dogg Pound. Snoop Dogg’s latest album, Doggystyle, was a critical and financial success in large part because of all the attention it received.
For several months, both “Who Am I (What’s My Name)?” and “Gin and Juice” ranked in the top 10 most frequently played songs on American radio, helping to catalyze the growth of West Coast G-funk hip hop.
Snoop Dogg was frequently highlighted as an example of violent and misogynistic singers in gangsta rap censorship and labeling arguments. Snoop Dogg, according to Chuck Philips, seemed to display a gentler side than many harsh gangsta rappers. While other rappers scream and scream, “Snoop’s vocal style is a component of what defines him: when many rappers roar, literally and symbolically, he talks quietly,” said Rolling Stone music reviewer Touré of Snoop’s delivery.
He’s never looked back since he made his debut in 1992. Broadus has gone a long way from Snoop Doggy Dogg to Snoop Lion and eventually Snoop Dogg.
